How a Congressional inquiry actually works

  1. 1. Pick one of your three federal reps (one of two senators, or your House rep). Most veterans use their House rep first — they handle smaller districts and respond faster.
  2. 2. Find the "Veterans Casework" or "Help with a Federal Agency" form on their website. Most offices also have a privacy-release form (Privacy Act 5 USC § 552a) you'll need to sign so the VA can release your file to the staffer.
  3. 3. The Congressional staffer routes your inquiry to the VA's Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs, which has a separate fast-track response queue. Expect a substantive VA reply in 1–3 weeks (much faster than direct VA channels).
  4. 4. File this in parallel with an IRIS inquiry and (if applicable) a supervisor or RO Director letter. They're not mutually exclusive — they reinforce each other.
